Whiplash

What is Whiplash?

Whiplash is frequently a misunderstood concept. It is an injury due to a rapid back and forth movement of the neck. This can result in injuries to the neck muscles, ligaments, nerves, joints and intervertebral discs. This injury is frequently due to automobile accidents but can be the result of other types of collisions such as sport injuries. Many terms have been used to describe this type of injury. Cervical acceleration-deceleration injury or CAD is a common term used to describe whiplash injuries. The condition is also called a cervical strain sprain injury.

Symptoms of Whiplash

Symptoms of whiplash, also called WAD or Whiplash Associated Disorder, most commonly include neck pain, upper back pain, shoulder pain, pain in the arms and headaches. Other less common symptoms include, dizziness, nausea, blurred vision, ringing in the ears, jaw pain, numbness, confusion and difficulty swallowing. It is not uncommon for a whiplash injury to also result in a concussion. A concussion is a bruising of the brain that can occur from the brain hitting the inside of the skull due to rapid head movement or impact. The symptoms of irritability and being easily distracted are common and indicate a worse prognosis.

Treating Whiplash at Foothills Chiropractic

Early mobilization has been shown to be one of the most effective treatments for whiplash injuries. Exercises to improve range of motion should be started as early as possible. Research has shown that wearing a soft cervical collar can actually slow the healing and can lead to chronic neck pain. Dr. Crawford has had extensive training in the treatment of whiplash due to automobile accidents and sports injuries. Early intervention is the best approach to help prevent permanent soft tissue residuals due to a whiplash injury. Spinal mobilization, inferential electrical stimulation, acupuncture and massage therapy can aide in the recovery of whiplash injuries.
